Guiding Principles for Workplace Behavior and Norms
These guiding principles represent ideals toward which we constantly strive and operate. We believe that they are important to state because they establish a standard for conduct and create trust in the workplace. The torch for this vision must be carried by all.
Trust, Honesty, and Teamwork
We seek to be honest in our professional interactions, striving always to act with integrity. This is the bedrock, the foundation, for the success of all our guiding principles. Core to good teamwork is having a shared vision, appreciating and understanding each other's roles and functions, being reliable with deadlines and being present, seeing linkages across departments, valuing the input from all voices, expertise and experience, and adhering to agreed upon processes that are clearly communicated.
Accountability
We take seriously our responsibility to ourselves, each other, customers and the community we serve. We follow through on what we commit or resolve to do. We continually reflect on our own behaviors, words and attitudes in the context of fulfilling goals as well as being an effective team member. We hold ourselves accountable when we make mistakes, acknowledging the error, taking corrective action and moving on.
Adaptability and Learning
We expect the best work from ourselves and each other on a consistent basis. As job requirements change, we accept the challenge to become curious and competent in new skills and behaviors. In recognition of these high expectations, the agency provides support for professional self-development: e.g., training, etc. We accept personal responsibility for taking advantage of opportunities provided for professional development.
Respect
We believe that all staff are valuable, and all roles are necessary to produce the work of the whole organization. We value being a diverse staff where different beliefs and cultural views are acknowledged. We act in good faith toward one another. We strive to recognize our own assumptions and remain open to other's perspectives. When we are confused or uncertain, we seek more information–we ask questions of the person or persons involved. We show respect by showing our interest, care and concern while simultaneously honoring other's boundaries.
Care for Ourselves and Each Other
The ethic of care begins with self-care, so that we have the wherewithal to have compassion for others. We continually seek to appropriately separate the professional and the personal. Self-care means planning for vacations, nourishing one's self on an ongoing basis. Care for others means offering support and encouragement; respecting personal boundaries, our own and other's; celebrating successes. We recognize that even when individuals may be experiencing difficult personal issues we can help each other feel competent, successful and valued on the job.
Resolving Conflict
Conflict is inevitable in the workplace and we value addressing it openly and with respect. We handle conflict in a professional manner, raising issues in a timely manner- ideally within 72 hours-directly with the person or persons involved in the first instance. If that does not resolve the issue, everyone has access to a supervisor or peer to assist. We respect personal and professional boundaries, and those not involved directly commit to remaining uninvolved.
Humor
Given the challenges of our lives and work, it is imperative to express and appreciate the fun and the funny. While it is important to take our work seriously, it is also important to keep ourselves in perspective. We use humor appropriately.
